Brazilian Waxing 101

As opposed to most women, I’ve never gotten a Brazilian wax (I know, shocker). The thought of it just freaks me out and it’s something I’ve always thought I could live without. I know there will be an occasion where a bikini wax is absolutely necessary but I’m trying to avoid it as much as possible. Hot wax being poured on my most sensitive area and then having chunks of hair ripped off? I’ll pass. But my friends all say they can’t live without their waxing appointments. There are some facts and tips for before, during and after getting a Brazilian that you will definitely benefit from knowing.

If You Hate Shaving:

It’s a true struggle when you absolutely hate shaving but also hate having hair. So, it seems that a Brazilian is the perfect go-to option that will keep you hairless down there for up to 6 weeks. Before going to your first Brazilian appointment, know that you will be fully exposing yourself to your waxer. This stranger is going to be up close and personal to your vagina and butt, so just be prepared for that. Think about it like going to the gyno- if that makes you uncomfortable, a Brazilian will probably make you feel the same way. But just think about how great you’re going to feel when it’s done!

My sister always has her waxing appointments scheduled in advance, so I figured she would be the perfect person to ask about her experiences. To my surprise, she told me that getting your booty waxed hurts the least and that it almost just feels like you’re being tickled. There aren’t any nerve endings in that area, so that’s why it won’t cause you any pain. This is good news for all of you who were nervous about that part of the waxing session!

Something to keep in mind: you have to let your hair grow out for a few days before getting a wax done. The whole point of getting yourself waxed is so that all of your hair can be taken off, so if you shave right before your appointment then there’s nothing for the wax to grab onto. Avoid shaving for about 2 weeks to get the most optimal results.

Something to watch out for: I’m not sure how many women actually follow this rule (it’s a hard one to obey) but it’s advised not to work out or have sex until 24 hours after your wax. This is to avoid any irritation, and I know that I don’t want any red bumps down there. Plan in advance and get a wax a few days before you plan that fun getaway weekend with your boy toy.

It’s Really Not THAT Bad!

To be honest, your wax isn’t going to feel like a walk in the park, but it really isn’t as bad as you think it’s going to be. I’m just a baby when it comes to pain (plus my boyfriend doesn’t mind a little hair down there) so I’ve just never felt the need to get a Brazilian. All of my girlfriends swear by it and tell me I’m crazy for never getting one, even though I do love getting my eyebrows waxed (is that weird?) Try to think of the warm wax as soothing. Just like a brow or lip waxing there is a little sting when they pull off the wax, but that tingly feeling only lasts for a few seconds. Plus, you kind of get used to the feeling the more often you go, so it eventually won’t even bother you!

All in all, a Brazilian is necessary and it isn’t as bad as you think it’s going to be. Just be confident and go into the experience with all positive thoughts. Good luck and happy waxing!
